Dungeon Runners: play for free MMORPGs - a trend we hope continues

NCsoft has launched its first free title, Dungeon Runners, a light-hearted fantasy MMORPG available for complete download at the game's website.

Free users will be able to play the game in its entirety. For $4.99 a month, however, members will receive log-in queue priority and access to the highest tiers of loot - not available to free players.

It will be interesting to see whether this experiment works. It's true that there's no better advertisement for a good game than playing it, and by most accounts Dungeon Runners is a solid MMORPG. Five bucks a month is a nominal fee, and I imagine that most of those who play the game regularly will pay up. If the model succeeds it's not hard to see other MMORPG development studios following suite. Which is neat - because free gaming is good for the soul.
